Winton, if you're looking for more stuff along these lines, definitely check out the Bad Livers -- ex-punk people who have been doing some genuinely fine bluegrass for the last ten years or so. The bass player doubles on tuba occasionally. Much fun.
btw, the Vandals pre-date Freese's association with G'n'R by many years. They are one of the more persistent parts of the 80's soCal punk scene (Descendents, All, NoFX, etc.). Not my cup of tea, but good at what they do.
