I played on an old H.N. White back a few years ago. It was a laquered four-valve model, beautifully engraved bell, must've weighed close to 50 pounds, had a bell collar that practically could've fit a watermelon, and was in beautiful shape. I've never seen anything like it since, so yes, I'd agree they're pretty rare.

The thing sounded *HUGE*, much bigger than the 20Ks we had at the time. You could put some sizzle on the sound, or even push it past the point of no return if you wanted. The redline on it, though, was way past any other sousaphone I've played.

I'd have to say they differ in a lot more ways than just looks...
