I went down this path when I bought a tuba for my forteith birthday after having not played since college. I bought a BB for exactly the reasons John Swensen noted. I now have 5 years of playing under my belt and NO REGRETS. Most ensembles and/or directors just want you to hit the right note! As an amateur, the oportunity to play has not been hampered by the key of my instrument. I figure I would have lost several months of useful playing transitioning my brain to the alternate key. Focusing on sound production rather than fingering, at the time was an advantage.

Still, the better horns remain in the key of CC, so my next horn may well be in CC........ultimately the fingerings are the same.....it's just that the notes on the staff are different.
