Your story if fairly typical. Many older people who have not played for several years restart. I've even seen some who never played start. Renting a tuba is very expensive even if you can find someone who"ll rent you one. I would suggest that you look into your local communiy or junior college groups. You need a group just to give you incentive to practice. Some of the groups have a tuba that you can use or know of people who will lend you one. These may not be great instruments but it will get you started again. After you've played a little start going to things like the tuba and euphonium conference at Ft. Myer, Va. When you'v played a little you'll get an idea of how much you want to spend and what type horn you really want.
