I agree with you, my information is that the 631 was meant to be the Yamaha equivalent of the Boosey Sovereign. But the 631 has a 17" bell while the Boosey has a 19" bell. So now the 632 is here and the Brasswind catalog has in the description "wider bell flare for richer sound quality". So it sounds to me like the Yamaha 632 is nearly identical to the Boosey 981. This is consistent with past practice, compare the Yamaha 642 euphonium to the Besson 967GS and see that they are extremely similar. My memory is that this is how Yamaha got going with their brass instruments, by making instruments based on a "tried and true" design but making them with better workmanship and lower cost. Unfortunately, the lower cost aspect seems to have disappeared...
