Thanks for the suggestions. I am familiar with red rot, but I don't think that is the problem, here, as the horn is new, and red rot is very uncommon with nickel silver (~15% Ni, ~20% Zn, balance Cu) (for that matter, de-zincification is also prevented if the copper content is 85% or greater [hence the use of rose brass or red brass for leadpipes], or if small amounts of arsenic are added to the brass [arsenical brass]). Both the inner and outer slides of my horn are nickel silver.
