Two thoughts:
Some FM receivers clip higher frequencies in order to filter out extraneous noise. I know this is true for car receivers and it might be true for some home receivers. As I remember, FM is capable of about 90 db bandwidth which isn't as good as CD or the original tape you are hearing.
Mike Thornton, in his writeup on the TE website, suggests that the size of the performance venue has a lot to do with horn selection. I heard many concerts in Cincinnati Music Hall (huge) before going to Atlanta (small). Mike Thornton (Cincinnati) played an Alex when I was there and Mike Moore (Atlanta) played a Holton. Both large horns in the hands of very good musicians but a substantial difference in the sound.
