I am a tuba performance major here at LSU. This is my 3rd year here and I can tell you that since Dr. Skillen has arrived our studio has exploded with great talent and skill. He did his undergraduate work at Tennessee Tech with R. Winston Morris, studied in Sweden with Michael Lind, and did his DMA work at Michigan State with Phil Sinder. It is true that he is one of the younger tuba artists out there, but I assure you that he is one of the kindest and finest musicians that you can study with. Also, to rub out a rumor, he is NOT using LSU as a "stepping-stone" to further his career. He has stated to the studio that he wishes to stay here for a long time and build a very respectable studio.
LSU has many great things to offer a music student, but only you can decide if it's right for you. If you wish, you can get in contact with me when you come to audition and I will show you around.
