To say that the tuba cannot be a solo instrument is obsured. I went to a Merry Tuba Christmas one year when Pat Sheridan was a guest soloist. He's got as much chops as anyone on any insrument out there. He didn't even play tuba pieces; he played violin concertos and with as much agillity as any violinist i've ever heard. I also had the chance to meet Sam Palafian this last year. He is a brilliant performer also. Others such as Roger Bobo and Charels Dahlenbach have given other instruments a run for their money too, by pushing the limits of performance. Whether you like the sound of a tuba solo or not is up to you, but to say that it cannot be an effective or even dizzying solo instrument is rediculous and stupid. If you really want to experinence shame, listen to Howard Johnson and Gravity. It's an all tuba jazz band and an amazing one at that.
