Also don't forget - I know of no band director that puts brand new horns in elementary or middle school band. They get destroyed. So, these kids learn on whatever hand - me -downs the school has seen fit to replace at the high school level. Since these have always been BBb's, the kids get to learn on BBb. It's a financial matter more than anything else. My school didn't replace their 1950's vintage 25-J's until the mid-80's. Since I was in Jr. High then, guess what I got to learn on? A horn that was considerably bigger than me, and definitely more abused.
