Interesting thread - I especially appreciated the bit about the overdiagnosis of ADD (I was only a band director for a year, and if I had a nickel for every parent that cried ADD....).
I've often wondered why manufacturers don't make inexpensive Eb tubas for use in middle school programs. The instruments tend to be easier to play for smaller folks, the transition from trumpet or treble clef baritone is SUPER easy (the position of the note and the fingering stays the same, only the note name changes), and the smaller bore size of the old Eb tubas gives young players a bit of a handicap towards learning how to blow a horn (as opposed to trying to fill up a full sized BBb tuba). Just a thought....
