I find it strange and amusing that Dohnanyi would make such a distinctiion about tubas when he pays so little attention to percussion. In his recording of the Mahler 4th (Dawn Upshaw, soprano) there's a climactic spot towards the end of the first movement where the cymbal player places about 8 out of 20 cymbal crashes in the wrong place. While in his recording of the Mahler 6th symphony, Dohnanyi allows the percussion section to use something that sounds like a metallic "ping" for the two hammerblows when the score very specifically states that the hammerblows are not to be of a metallic sound, but rather something wooden instead. I also find it amusing that he would want to trade the Cleveland Orchestra for London's Philharmonia Orchestra - good as they are, they ain't in the same league, and neither are their concert venues.
