Those are some good ideas! I also came to the conclusion that a cotter pin type setup would work but I haven't gotten around to trying to manifest it on a stand. Its good to know I was on the right track. I've developed my own solution for the top height adjustment which sounds similar to yours. What I'm still working on is the retaining screw for the bottom tripod part. The current setup there deforms the center tube and causes the telescoping function of the center post to be extremely sluggish. This is so hard to describe! I haven't had any problems with the top pad wearing out though, so I can't offer you any advice on that one. If I think of something I'll let you know.
