Here's an exercise that may help, in addition to Sean's recommendations. At the very end of your practice session, pick a simple etude to play (this can be mostly quarter notes - nothing complicated). Play this etude extremely loudly. Push the sound PAST the threshold of good taste and allow the tone to not sound its best. This should only be done for about 5 minutes and again I stress AT THE END OF YOUR PRACTICE SESSION, otherwise you may be too "fried" to continue. Like every other aspect of playing, your body needs to learn what to do under given circumstances. After a week or two of doing this exercise, you will find that when you back off a dynamic level or two, you will be playing with much much more volume and the ability to control it. Then you can go about applying your sound concept.

Speaking of which, be sure to listen to recordings of orchestras that have great orchestral players. Warren Deck, Ellis Wean, Arnold Jacobs (of course), just to name a few. This will help cement that internal concept of great orchestral sound.
