I think that a version of Finale by Coda Music Technologies is a product you should definitely check out. Brasswind has Finale98 listed at $379.00, $250.00 for the academic.
It is pretty user friendly after you put in some time using it. I teach a course on Finale, so feel free to email me if you have any questions.
