Dale, I wish the best for you! A worrisome scenario would be a pre-cancerous spot. My Dad had something like that located in his mouth area, and the doctor removed it, told him to take some special medicine for a while, and that was that.
As far as it effecting your playing, my friend Ken Yount, who was a trombone student of Thomas Beversdorf, principal trombonist in the orchestra here, and who also manufactures Ludwig Drum Company's temple blocks, had an unfortunate accident with a chainsaw quite a few years ago, as it kicked back into his lip. Ken's trombone playing trademark is his beautiful tone. After healing and practicing, his sound was back 100%.
I hope that my experiences are appropriate to relay. I have not had the experience that you are undergoing, but I am trying to relate two that involved people who are close to me., and how well they did.
