I have heard of quite a few tuba's riding in luxury in their own seat on airlines, as well as other large instruments. While I find gig bags extremely useful for local venues, I was very thankful to have a hardcase when I went overseas. As has been mentioned before, one that fits snug will protect your tuba. I had absolutely no problem. (Other than actually lugging that thing around for 2 weeks got kind of old!)
