not only is the NY phil low brass section the best ever, but the recordings made in the last ten years with Masur are hands-down, no contest, the best overal orchestral recordings EVER made. They are technical and musical mavels that won't be challenged for a long time. Second though, has to be newer Philly recordings (especially since Nitzan Haroz became principal trombone(though I mean no disrespect to the great Glenn Dodson)). Third is CSO w/ reiner, then CSO w/ Barenboim, then CSO Solti. Not to be forgotten is the San Francisco Symph w/ Bloomstedt (then Tilson-Thomas)- great brass, but the strings always leave you with something to be desired, they just can't compete with Philly or NY.
