I believe you summed it up best when you said, "His sound was way bigger ...". There is no special trick or gadget or specific instrument which will give you the "way bigger" sound. This is something that comes from the mind and is cultivated through diligent practice. Projection is obtained when the sound is complete.

You can't very well go out and slap down some cash and walk away with a big sound. The person you heard has probably put more time in behind the horn, heard and absorbed more quality examples of fine playing, and experienced more in music than you have at this time. If you are honest with your practice efforts and stay focussed consistently over a span of time, then you too will begin to sound like your ideal. Right now, it sounds like you have a mental aural image of what you consider to be excellence. Use that in your everyday practice. Think of that sound everytime things don't quite click. Strive to reach that sound, then perhaps pass it in search of something even more ideal.

Try not to confuse loud/overblown/blasting with strength of sound presence.
