Acoustically, a larger bell diameter is a more efficient "coupler" of low frequency energy to the atmosphere, so that low notes would be heard better near the player. The narrower bell style is more directional, and would probably "project" more. I've always thought the term "recording bell" meant those large diameter bells in either the upright or forward position.
