What is the best way to make a decent sounding audition tape, with and without piano accompaniment? I have read the 2 page article in The Tuba Source Book on this subject, but sound recording is somewhat foreign to me and I did not really understand it.

Short of going into a recording studio, what is the minimal set-up needed to do this.

Please give all details: types of equipment, microphones, mixers, etc.

Based on what I have gone through trying to get a decent sounding tape, it seems that you almost have to hire a professional sound engineer. Tell me it ain't necessary.
