This past summer my friend Kathy Graves showed up at our local
Brass Chamber Music Workshop (at Humboldt State University)
with a brand new Willson BBflat. Now Kathy has been playing
a BBflat Conn (2J?) for years, so she was reluctant to use
the big Willson in small ensemble settings, but when she did
(usually at the urging of the other quintette-members)
she had an AWESOME sound! Certainly not overpowering of the
ensemble, although it could be I suppose if played by some
insensitive volume-junky, but this horn sounded REALLY great.
I did not get a chance to play it that week, but you can bet
I will wanna try it out the next time we get together.

Oh, for what its worth, the Humboldt Brass Chamber Music
Workshop is in something like it's 25th year, and is a
wonderful way to vacation in the beautiful Northern
California redwoods...that is if you think 80-100
brass players playing 6-10 hours + a day in all sorts of
daily configurations sounds like vacation!
(write me with your snail-mailing address for details...)
