While I was working up my euph chops for Bydlo, I decided to play in one of the concert bands in town to get some face time....and I did play a concert with them. When I was walking out after the concert, the conductor thanked me for playing. High class guy, right?
Then, a couple months later when I tried to play tuba in the same band...he kicked me out unceremoniously because "we don't need tubas; if you don't want to play euph or horn, we don't need you." Jerk, right? But simultaneously asked me to play tuba in his orchestra. Nice guy..jerk....opportunity...lack therof.
There's just no telling where people are coming from. Your best bet, always, is to take nothing personally and ALWAYS be pleasant and keep your complaints to yourself. It took me many years of observing socially successful people before I figured out to do this. I'm still not "perfect" at it, but I'm way better than I was.
