I hope I'm correct in assuming that keeping your joints from being chilled helps keep them mobile. If so, then this is the most tangible reason I've seen for putting a leather wrap on a horn -- more so than for sound characteristics.

My mom's had a leather handguard on her French horn for maybe twenty years, and it's surely helped prevent injuries to her hand. Well, that, and the lighter demands of being a part-time player, too.
