Lew's union activism was quite profound - as I tried to describe in my post above. Florence Nelson, who is now the AFM Secetary-Treasurer replaced him when he retired as AFM SSD Director. You might wish to contact her: 212-869-1330.
Lew was very involved in the establishment of what we today regard as "normal" audition practices, and contract terms in the symphony world.
There was a lot more to Lew than just tuba playing.
