The 981 can be had for around $5500-$6000 new if you can find one, with the finish (silver or lacquer) and bad exchange rates (i.e. higher prices) affecting the price. It is a different horn than the 983, but the extensive use of the 981 in a variety of situations in the UK (e.g. an orchestral tuba, solo horn for Steve Sykes) demonstrates its versatility.

The 981 should not really sound a wee bit small, so perhaps a mouthpiece experiment might fix this perception (and any eefer pre-conceptions). It is a very solid instrument that has proven itself well over time. If you like the 3+1 valve set up (I do) it is a wonderful instrument. Good luck!
