I have played a Mirafone contrabass for many years in the Edmonton Opera, and the occasional trombone choir. As as tuba player, it has always been a difficult instrument for me to play. If I don't play it at least on a semi regulare basis, I lose the sound quickly. This Mirafone sounds at its best with other trombones around it, and pretty exciting at the higher dynamics. The mouthpiece which has worked best for me is labeled as "Mirafone F" It is a small shank, cup shaped, with a very tight throat. The larger mouthpieces just seemed to lose the trombone quality (for me). I think cimbssso is the way to go. Even with my horrid slide technique, I have had more success on this contrabass than the bass trombonists who have attempted it.
