Lots of times. First, make sure that the destination depot has freight service. Then have a talk with the person who handles freight on your end--he or she gets to call the shots as to how things are going. Forget the Amtrak 800 number people.

Pack your horn in its case so it'll survive a moderate amount of tossing about (not like the airlines). Some depots will even let you put your horn on the baggage car yourself.

Make sure that your package has the destination clearly marked inside and out.

I've never had a mishap in sending a couple of dozen horns around and I've found the depot people to be very helpful. Just remember that they're railroad folks and do things by the book.
