For me, the biggest problem with the MW "Big Valve" set is the placement of the 5th valve. I've played several 2155s, 2165s and 45SLPs, and some of them had VERY different configurations when it came to the 5th valve. The 2155 I own is very comfortable (IMO) but the last time I played one at Dillon it had a 5th that made it so that I couldn't play the horn for more than ten minutes without pain in my wrist. I've noticed similar differences in the 45SLP. Some of these may have been due to aftermarket "surgery", but I couldn't tell you anything about that.

If you were to go to a tuba dealer and find a 45SLP you really like, maybe the seller could do a simple alteration to the mechanism on the 5th valve so your hand placement would be more natural.

Just a thought

J
