I have heard this same problem from someone here at school where I go (WKU) and it ended up being something stuck in the lead pipe. Have them clean out the instrument. But really, it could be a number of things. To best explain it, have them to go Steve Mead's website www.euphonium.net and look under the FAQ section. I think this will help. It's the direction of the air, more than likely, that is causing this problem.
