The 1st MarDiv band went with their division to Iraq (or Afghanistan, heck if I remember by now). It really depends, but they are deployable to some degree, and sometimes will go on various exercises with the grunts with which they're posted. All are combat trained, which makes sense when you remember that Army PFC Jessica Lynch's away-from-the-front-lines motor transport unit was attacked.
No, it's not purely a sit-down & ceremonial gig, but if you think you might tire of something so sedentary, then a Marine fleet band might be a good time.
