Rob,
Scales are one of those things that dont go away. If you are in a good program, which I sense that you are, you will be playing scales at some level for a long time to come. I am a freshman at UH and we have to play scales all the time for a variety of reasons. Can you play all your scales (there are not just twelve) without any mistakes?? Can you slur them, then tongue them, and maybe play them in a lifted manner?? How many octoves can you play them?? (they are a excellent way to improve range). Scales are also very helpful in learning "patterns" for your fingers, which you will use to learn music more quickly. The point is, scales are very important to improving in music, so suck it up and keep going. OH, and try not to tell the director that you think he is wrong; that doesn't work most of the time.
