What I did after I bought a vintage Rudy my senior year was intimidate the people into leaving it alone. After they knew I would use violence to protect my possessions then I helped that not occur but always leaving my tuba in its place (for me the band director's office) or by constantly watching it, never standing it up where it could fall, and keeping the people who didn't care about anything away from my horn. I got lucky and nothing happened to it. The same can't be said for my collegues' school horns.
It did help that I happened to be the biggest and most physically able person in our band, which was by no means a feat but it worked.
Keep using the horn you love, why buy something if you aren't going to play it? Just take all precations to protect it and everything will probably work out.
Sorry for your horn and hassle.

Casey
