There are two basic types of speaker which basically correspond to 'German' and 'American' bell-shapes. If I've got this right the German shapes are designed for a column of sound which works best indoors as it uses the hall as a sound chamber. The American shape work well outside because they naturally have a 'wide-spread' sound.
Hope I got that at least partly right! : )
