My first suggestion is that you need to stay in one area for a long time - at least 3-5 years - if you seriously want to break into the scene as a freelancer. Nothing is going to happen in a couple of months.

My second suggestion is that you pick a place where it's possible, otherwise suggestion #1 is just a waste of time.

My third suggestion is to try to get along with everyone you meet - be agreeable, and always play at your absolute best, no matter how "beneath you" you perceive a given gig to be - you never know who's listening. Otherwise, suggestions 1 and 2 are both wastes of time.
