I had the trumpet player (very fine) who sits in front of me in the orchestra sharing the pew with me at a concert yesterday. In our conversation he asked me what kind of tuba I was playing....I'm pretty sure the guy before me was on an American tuba, and I have my Miraphone, which has a very different sound spectrum. I'll never know if the trumpeter likes it better or worse. I DO know the other guy is a better player, because I've heard him. So I guess if the tpt player doesn't like the sound, maybe he'll blame it on the tuba...
