I think you have it nailed.

For me, if it has pistons poking out the front and fits in a Cronkhite Grand Orchestral Tuba gig bag, it's probably an American-style tuba. If it's too long for that bag and has rotaries, then it's probably a German-style tuba. If that test is inconclusive (i.e., it fits but has rotaries), then most other tests are also likely to be inconclusive as well.
