The two-steps-forward, one-step-back thing is where all hobbyists are. Sometimes, we can really practice regularly and make good progress, and other times, life intrudes and we may go weeks without playing outside of rehearsals. It's really frustrating to go back over old ground. But I find that it always takes less time and energy the second time around; at least we know the way.
