I agree that a shallower cup (not the rim diameter so much)makes the higher range less taxing especially if you are playing up there for extended periods like if you are playing the first tuba part in a tuba/euph quartet. Part of the confusion is probalby due to the fact that often times shallower cups are on smaller diameter rims also, but the two can be exclusive.

Using the trumpet player analogy that was mentioned earlier. The famous (or infamous) Jet-Tones were very shallow cup mouthpiece and were used for the high stuff by many a hack.

Now when you go with a shallow cup you also are going to effect the tone too, but that will have to wait for another post.
