Cellists do this all the time, when they can afford it. I haven't done this since '97, with southwest. It was a hassle, but not a terrible one. Security had me take it out of the bag, and one guy reached into the bell to check for bombs and such. After my tuba was molested, the plane crew was difficult. They were concerned that it couldn't be secured safely for take-off, but two seat-belt extenders later all was well. I even got an obnoxious little kid to finally shut up when I explained that I was keeping my sister in the bag for the trip because she misbehaves.
