Yes, I've had problems with big Conns, though I know bands with whole sections of 24J's. In fact, one band near here won't even let you in without one (I don't play in that group). Intonation was a worse problem than not being able to play it softly. I can see why one player on a Miraphone might really cause problems next to three on Conns.

My point was that just the thing you complained about (too much presence) might be an advantage in a community band while it is a disadvantage in a small or medium-sized orchestra.

The Holton has the quality of not being woofy, especially with the PT-48, which I think is one of the great anti-woof mouthpieces. I've heard BATs that were, but then I've heard people get a woofy sound on smaller tubas, too.
