I've flown with my tuba by buying a second seat. I never had to fill out any paper work. Be sure you call the airline several times before you fly. Keep the names of everyone you talk to. The day you fly have all your information handy, when you called and who you talked to. Also they may have you sit in a bulk head row (a seat with a wall in front of you). Last time I flew like this, the only bulk head row was in first class. They had to move a honeymooning couple. I felt like poop but the airline dropped the ball. It all ended up working out. The married couple got free tickets any where in the USA and I got two meals. I'm a fatty:)
