My son is a college freshman who has flown at least a dozen times with his tuba in the last year between auditions last year and now trips home this year. We invested in a Walter Johnson case, stuff an old pillow in the bell, and although the outside of the case is pretty scratched up, the tuba has come through safe and sound. As far as cost goes, most times, the counter people look at it, scratch their heads, tag it and put it on through. We were charged full oversized price only once, and $25 another time and that was it.
