I believe he is referring to technique. The valves are quick, and the 2XJ's are responsive. For their size, they are capable of what Jacobs called the "velocity parts".

But for a general-purpose tuba, however, I would prefer the old King. It's smaller, much better in tune, easier to carry, and can be played very softly (which I was never able to do satisfactorily with my 20J). A 1241 with four valve would be even better. I've heard more than one authoritative opinion claim that the 1241's were better than the later 2341's (though not better than the new-style 2341's with the one-piece bell). The 1241 that my wife's uncle bought from Baltimore Brass was one of the best of the Kings I've played, and did nothing in my mind to dispell the regard for the older models.
