During my last outing teaching university students, I was noticing how much they were struggling with the simple "48 scales" that I have emphasized here.
I began asking them to play stuff like (not necessarily these particular tunes, but random well-known-to-the-mind tunes such as)
The Christmas Song
Swanee River
Row, Row Your Boat
You Are My Sunshine
...stuff like that.
Not only could they not do this, (though they COULD sing these tunes) they had no clue what scale-steps simple tunes as these STARTED on...
...No wonder SCALES were so "foreign" to them, and so difficult to learn for them.
