Pipe makers have been making "bellied" organ pipes for centuries. They've known empirically that pipes made slighty bowed outwards in the mid-section have improved pitch stability and reduced "drawing" - the tendency for pitches to "pull" each other into tune when played together. Want to make a practically untuneable rank of pipe? Slightly pinch them in the middle like a wasp-waist......
