for me, the problem with having to wear earplugs (like when sitting 3 feet from Galen Lemmon when he's beating the tympani skins) is that although the plugs protect my ear(s) from that outside noise, they also completely ruin the whole reason I want to play tuba....that being because I love the sound I hate 'em and if I cannot reduce the times I have to use them, and the need for plugs increases (less rehearsal space, poor performance setups, etc) I'll probably quit playing before I allow it to become habit.

I did an AWEsome band gig sunday in San Jose, and although my playing was (!) very highly complemented afterwards (they were very kind) it was not all that enjoyable due to earplugs.
