It is my opinion that Gene Pokorny has the epitome of tuba sound on "Tuba Tracks" whether he is playing bass tuba or contrabass. It seems like he has a very different sound on each instrument. However, it is a fantastic sound.
I also like Jim Self's bass tuba sound on "Changing Colors".
And of course I admire the playing of Brian Nalepka on any of Leon Redbone's recordings. It's not very effecient. It's not clean. It's not a focused sound. But the music is really cool......
