I had for many years a Conn sousaphone with 4 valves and a 30+ inch bell. It sounded good and played well but it was terribely out of tune! Worst than any of my intonation calcultaions would indicate. Going up a chromatic scale one would find variations in intonation of 40 to 50 cents sharp or flat! I sold it to Mr. Pucci who could not make it fit in his car.
