For optimum results, you should clean your instrument by disassembly and washing once a month. If you do this, wiping down the valves between cleanings should not be necessary.
Cheesecloth works very well for wiping down pistons, and when threaded onto a short cleaning rod, is very effective for swabbing out valve casings.
As long as you are using a soft, lint-free material to wipe down the valves, they are not likely to be scratched.
